WGとPGの間のようなどこにもない色

高級ブランドのステンレススティール製モデルとして誕生した“元祖ラグスポ”ロイヤルオークだが、その試作品はホワイトゴールド素材で作られていた。また、1977年にはイエローゴールド製のレディスモデル「ロイヤルオークⅡ」が登場。同年、メンズモデルにも初のイエローゴールドとホワイトゴールドが追加された。腕時計では長らくホワイト、イエロー、ピンクゴールドが金ケース素材の大勢を占めていたが、近年は、各社独自のゴールドを開発。オーデマピゲも独自のゴールドケースを採用した「ロイヤルオークフライングトゥールビヨンオープンワーク」を発表した。

6時位置にフライングトゥールビヨンを配したこちらの新作は、シンメトリーデザインのオープンワークを時計の両面に採用した1本。最新テクノロジーを駆使し、まずブリッジと地板はデジタル機械（CNC）でカットし、次に放電機械（EDM）でディテールを整える。これを手仕上げすることによりモダンで立体的、かつエレガントなオープンワークとなる。

そして外装には独自の“サンドゴールド”を取り入れた。太陽に輝く砂丘にちなんで名付けられたこの素材は、金に銅とパラジウムを加えた暖かい色が特徴。ホワイトゴールドとピンクゴールドの中間の色みが光によって微妙に変化し、経年による黄ばみや変色にも強い。このサンドゴールド製のケースとブレスレットにサテン＆ポリッシュ仕上げを使い分けたことで高級感もいっそうアップ。

さらにオープンワークのブリッジと地板までサンドゴールド仕様に。これにガルバニック加工を施してグレー味を加える一方、トゥールビヨンをはじめとする輪列や裏面の22Kピンクゴールド製ローターはロジウム仕上げにしてコントラストを際立たせている。素材とデザインで差をつけた複雑系のラグスポだ。
