以前のトラックっぽさはほとんどない

キャデラックエスカレード — 磁性流体バンパーを用いたマグネティックライドコントロールを採用するサスペンションを装着。リアには新開発の独立懸架式が用いられている。

見晴らしの良さに改めて感心しながら高速道路に乗ってみれば、これが意外にも快適でまずはひと安心だった。特に時速55マイル＝90km/hあたりのクルージングが圧倒的に気持ち良い。

クルマにもテロワールがあると確信するのはいつも高速ドライブの時で、設計された国や地域の高速道路における制限速度前後の領域で最も気持ちよくドライブできるようセッティングされているケースが多い。アメリカといえば時速55マイル制限がメジャー。だから、そこが高速クルージングのスイートスポットになるというわけ。

もう少し速度を上げてみた。新東名の120km/h区間だ。この速度域になると、アウトバーンとは言わないまでもフランスあたりのオートルートレベルで、欧州の巡航域。以前のエスカレードであればフレームボディ特有の妙な共振が出たりして、あまり楽しいドライブにはならなかったけれど、新型は違った。

リアサスペンションが独立懸架になったせいか、オートルート領域でもピタッと落ち着きのある走りを見せる。４輪の回り方が驚くほどスムーズで、大きなタイヤの存在も感じさせない。だから以前のようなトラックっぽさなど、もうほとんどないと言っていい。

6.2リッターV8OHVエンジンを積む。今どきハイブリッドでさえない。けれども10段ATとの組み合わせで高速燃費は10km/l以上と、これまた意外に伸びた。絶対的な数値としては犯罪的かもしれないけれど、思い出してみて欲しい。このクルマは小さなバス並みにデカいということを。

見晴らしの良さには意外な副産物もあってドライブを飽きさせない。高速道路から普段は見通せない景色まで見えてなんだか嬉しくなってしまった。クルージング時の乗り心地も悪くなく直進安定性も問題なし、とくれば、グランドツーリング性能は十二分、と言いたいところだったけれど、ちょっと急なカーブが連続するような場面ではさすがに重量とサイズを感じさせた。速度と調子に乗ってはいけないということだ。

京都の街中ではどうだったか。“どうだ、デカいだろう”と並んでみれば、ゲレンデやアルファードのオーナーが心なしか目を逸らす。そんな優越感を存分に楽しみながら、細い道でもまず問題なく走っていけた。そりゃそうだ。京都の市バスは結構細い路地にも入ってくる。バス路線であればたとえ日本車離れしたサイズであっても臆することなどないわけだ。

むしろ視界の良さと四角いスタイルがせせこましい京都の街中では有効だった。コインパーキングだって最新の設備と広さであれば楽々とは言わないまでも十分入っていける。問題があるとすれば、ちょっとした路駐や突き当たりの路地からバックなど、京都の街中でありがちな場面での不便くらいだ。あと、燃費。街中ではさすがに悪く4km/l台。
