キングセイコーとは？

「キングセイコー」という名をご存知だろうか？キングセイコーはグランドセイコーと同じく、1960年代、セイコーが手がけた高級時計の名称である。グランドセイコーが日本の時計史に燦然と輝く高級時計の代表格であるのにくらべ、キングセイコーは同じ高級時計でありながら、いまいち影が薄い。そこで今回は、この隠れた名作の歴史と歴代モデルについて紹介していきたい。

ファーストモデルの誕生とその背景

グランドセイコーが誕生した翌年の1961年、キングセイコーの初代モデルがデビューした。このファーストには「クロノス」に使用されていた薄型高性能の手巻きキャリバー54Aの改良版が搭載され、香箱上下の軸受けにも穴石を使った25石、さらに裏蓋にはゴールドのメダリオンを配し、機能・デザインとも高級時計の風格に満ちた仕上がりとなった。販売価格は1万2000〜1万5000円。これは当時の上級国家公務員の初任給に相当する価格である。

ここでひとつ疑問が残る。キングセイコーはグランドセイコー同様の高級時計であり、発売当初はデザインもよく似ている。なぜ同じような高級時計をわずか1年後に発売したのか？もちろん当時の高級時計需要の高まりという側面もあっただろうが、そこにはもうひとつの大きな背景がある。

当時、セイコーには諏訪精工舎と第二精工舎という2つの生産拠点が存在した。これらは同じ精工舎の兄弟企業ながらもそれぞれが独立していて、いわばライバル関係にあった。なかでも長野県諏訪を拠点とする諏訪精工舎は社内の花形で、いち早くスイス製高級時計を意識したグランドセイコーを開発。一方、これに対抗するように、東京・亀戸が拠点の第二精工舎もキングセイコーを開発する。後年その構図は崩れるものの、グランドセイコーは諏訪、キングセイコーは亀戸という棲み分けが当初はあった。
