新機能搭載で進化を見せた迫力満点の衛星表示モデル
ウルベルクは1997年、2人の人物によって創設されたスイスの時計ブランドだ。そのひとりフェリックス・バウムガルトナーは3代にわたる時計師一家に生まれ、早くからトゥールビヨンやミニッツリピーターといった複雑時計の製作で腕を磨いてきた。もうひとりのマーティン・フレイは、ルツェルンのアート＆デザイン学校を卒業後、絵画、彫刻、映像まで幅広く手がけてきたデザイナーであり、バウムガルトナーが作り出す機構を芸術的に仕上げる。2003年にハリー・ウィンストンのオーパスに携わったことで、2人の名声はいちやく世界中に広まった。
「UR-220 ファルコンプロジェクト」は、前作UR-210の発表からわずか数ヶ月後に登場した新作である。前作との最大の違いは、ケースバック側にオイル交換インジケーターを搭載すること。2つのローラーに月単位で表示されるこのカウンターは、ユーザー自身がプッシュボタンを押すことでムーブメント稼働時間のログを開始し、39ヶ月経つとアフターサービスでオイルを交換。適切なメンテナンスの時期を知らせる仕組みとなる。
また、前作を踏襲するのが特許取得の衛星表示である。まず“時”は、ダイヤル中央の3つの回転する立方体の時表示が順番にデジタル表示する。それぞれの立方体は、ダイヤル下部に施されたスケール上に差しかかると同時に、先端がポインターとなったフレームと重なって“分”を表示。この分表示はレトログラード式となり、60分に達するとポインター付きのフレームのみがスケールの開始地点にフライバックする。一方、そのまま回り続ける立方体は、数字を入れ替えながら次回の時分表示に備えるのだ。
このような独創的にして複雑な衛星表示を受け継ぎつつ、新たにオイル交換表示の採用で進化したウルベルクの新作。さらに、ケースには初のカーボン素材を取り入れて軽量・強靭化を図るとともに、個性的な外観にも磨きをかけている。
