ユニークな円形暦表示に潜む極めて革新的なメカニズム
その姿は、まるで古代の円形劇場を見るかのよう。段差をもって同心円上に外側から日、月、曜日の各表示リングが設置され、中央のステージではキャリッジにCを象ったフライングトゥールビヨンが主役となって舞う。製作を担うのは、ジュネーブにあるカルティエの高級時計工房。ムーブメントのパーツも、ケースやダイヤルも、入念に手仕上げが施され、ジュネーブ・シールを取得している。
搭載される複雑機構はトゥールビヨンだけではない。ユニークな円形の暦表示は、永久カレンダーなのである。各表示をブルーのフレームが取り囲んで今日の暦を示し、シースルーバック側には閏年表示も備わる。円形表示によって良好な視認性を得た永久カレンダーは、極めて革新的でもある。驚くべきことに、日と月表示の調整はリューズで進められるだけでなく、戻すこともできるのだ。
一般的な永久カレンダーは、48ヶ月（4年）の月の大小をプログラミングしたホイールを読み取るレバーで日と月の各表示を動かしている。レバーは一方向にしか動かないので、前にしか動かせない。では何故、このアストロカレンダーは戻せるのか？ カルティエは、永久カレンダーの日・月表示に、48ヶ月ホイールとレバーではなく、すべて歯車が司る設計を与えたのだ。歯車は両方向に回転させられるから、戻すことが可能となった。48ヶ月ホイールが不要なアニュアルカレンダーには歯車式が多いが、永久カレンダーにはほぼ存在しない。月末の31日と30日、28日、そして4年に1度の29日を正確に表示するために、カルティエが“The Brain”と呼ぶ、複数の歯車とカムが重なる機構が考案された。
なんとも革新的な歯車とカムだけの永久カレンダー機構は耐久性に優れ、壊れにくい。また各表示の切り替え時に必要なパワーも少なく、精度に悪影響を与えない。カルティエの時計製造技術の高さを、アストロカレンダーは証明する。
