永久カレンダーの傑作がトゥールビヨンと初対面
1985年に誕生したダ・ヴィンチは、機械式時計再興の足掛かりとなった1本として、時計史にその名を残す名作である。汎用のクロノグラフ・ムーブメントに、永久カレンダーを搭載。各暦表示が一斉送りできる同複雑機構初の機能をもち、さらに同じく初となる
4桁数字の西暦表示
と122年以上調整が不要なアストロノミカル・ムーンフェイズも備えていた。設計者はIWCの生ける伝説クルト・クラウス氏。IWCは、この基本設計を受け継ぎ、永久カレンダーを熟成させてきた。
このモデルが搭載するCal.51950でクラウス式永久カレンダーが、トゥールビヨンと出会った。初搭載したのは2018年、創業150周年を記念したポルトギーゼの限定モデルだった。そして同コレクションがフルリニューアルされた2020年、新たな外装を与えたのが、本作である。
ベースムーブメントは、2000年に発表された自社製自動巻きCal.5000。12時位置にテンプをもつ設計で、それをトゥールビヨンに置き換えるにあたり、組み合わせる永久カレンダー・モジュールにも手が加えられた。元来、クラウス式永久カレンダーは、12時位置にムーンフェイズが備わる。それを6時位置に移し、さらにトゥールビヨンを見せるために、カレンダーオペレーションリングに穴を開ける処理をした。こうして組み込まれたトゥールビヨンの
キャリッジは、わずか0.625gと超軽量
で、ベースとなるCal.5000に備わる約7日間のロングパワーリザーブを継承する。それをかなえる2つの香箱は、IWC伝統のペラトン自動巻き機構が、高効率に巻き上げる。これも巻き上げ方向の切り替え車が、摩耗しないセラミック製に改良された。6時位置に移したアストロノミカル・ムーンフェイズも、
577.5年に1日の誤差
という、超高精度へと進化している。
