10年ぶりのフルモデルチェンジによって「JK型」から「JL型」へと進化したジープラングラー。発売から１年以上経ったいまなおバックオーダーを抱えるほどの人気を誇っている。高効率２ℓ４気筒ターボエンジンの設定や空力性能向上、アルミパーツの採用など、時代の要請に応える努力も見られるが、そこはやはりジープの精神的支柱たるモデル。タフなラダーフレーム式シャーシ、剥き出しのドアヒンジ、ワイドなフェンダー、スクエアなボディ形状、武骨なインテリアなど、そこかしこに本格派オフローダーらしさを強く漂わせている。

実際、ラングラーの悪路走破性は強烈だ。国際試乗会でカリフォルニアにあるオフロードの聖地「ルビコントレイル」を走ったのだが、歩いて登ることさえ難しい岩場をいとも簡単にクリアしてしまう走破性には驚きを通り越して畏敬の念すら覚えた。一方、先代の弱点だった後席の快適性や回転半径の大きさは大幅に改善され、本格オフローダーでありながら日常ユースにもフィットする使い勝手を手に入れたのは朗報だ。

せっかく手に入れたSUVの全てを味わい尽くす

コースに着いて、急な傾斜を間近で見る。とにかく不安だ。パートナーの性能がピカイチなのにやっぱり怖い。クルマが転がることはまずないが、スタックは普通に起こりうる。なので、まずは先生から基本的なことを教わることにした。

オフロードの基本はまず止まらないこと。スタックというのは砂や雪ですべり、タイヤが空転する状態を指す。空転すると車両は動かないまま地面を掘ってしまうので、余計に前へ進まなくなる。初心者でありがちなのは「恐怖でストップする」「再スタートでスリップ」「スタック状態で無理にアクセルオン」「地面を掘る」「脱出不可能」というパターンだ。

それから走行中は絶対にブレーキを踏まない。ブレーキを踏めばタイヤは回転を止め、止まったタイヤで地面を滑ることになる。これでは車両のコントロールなんてできる訳がないのだ。

ステアリング操作は言葉では難しいので実体験で学ぶことを勧められた。ならばとコースに車両を入れてみる。ラングラーは４ＷＤのモード切り替えができるので最初から最もハードな「４Ｌ」でコースを走る。目一杯アクセルを踏み込んで、怖がらずに傾斜を上がる。スタート直後から車両は明後日の方角を向く。いわゆるドリフト状態だ。

クルマをコース外に出さないようにコントロールするのに１５分ほど時間がかかった。コツをある程度掴んだら徐々にコースの奥へ。スピードを出して走るサーキットとは違う楽しさである。ドリフト走行は技術がないとできないが、オフロードでは初心者でもいやおうなくドリフト走行になる。これが新感覚で面白い。そして走り続けると本日のコースで最も厳しいセクションにさしかかる。「これは無理」と判断し、スタックしないように車両を止めて先生に尋ねると「ラングラーなら行けますよ」と。ならばと運転を代わってもらうと、いとも簡単にするりと走り抜けた。なんてことはない、ただのドライバーの技術不足である。

その後は走り方を教えてもらいつつ、もっと過激に走れるジムニーでの同乗走行をしてもらい、数時間コース上で遊ぶ。楽しいうえにとにかくタメになる経験だ。せっかくＳＵＶを所有するなら一度は経験しておくべきだろう。

走った後は施設内で泥を落とす。これもマナーである。

帰り際施設スタッフから面白い話を聞いた。雪深いエリアでのスピンなどの事故は意外とＳＵＶ率が高いのだという。恐らく４ＷＤに乗っている安心感が油断に繋がるからだろう。確かに油断する気持ちは分からないではない。オフロードコースを少し走っただけでドライバースキルは簡単にあがらない。むしろ、滑る怖さやコントロールできない恐怖をここで感じることが大事なのだと思う。

もちろん、早速実践。最強のオフローダーをトロトロと安全運転しながら帰ることにした。

信州大町チャレンジフィールド（写真4点）

白馬のやや南に位置する大町にある広大なコース。自動車だけでなくバイクなど様々な遊びに使用でき、オールシーズンに対応可能。利用者がいる時のみオープンする施設なので事前に稼働日をチェックするか仲間うちなど、団体などで申し込んで利用することになる。インストラクターによるオフロードコースの同乗走行も体験可能だ。
