今回はアクティビティに温泉巡りを選んだ。理由は2019年に過去最高の観光入込客数を記録し、大きな話題になった温泉街があると聞いたからだ。群馬県吾妻郡にある草津温泉である。
温泉の自然湧出量は日本一で、「にっぽんの温泉100選」では2019年に17年連続1位という偉業を達成した草津温泉。泉質、景観、温泉街の雰囲気や施設の充実度など、その魅力を挙げればきりがない。今回はこの人気観光地を目指し、ボルボ S60を走らせる。

疲れ知らずのシート、よくできた運転支援機能、優れた直進安定性、極上のオーディオ……。ボルボでのロングドライブはいつも最高に快適だ。暖冬の影響で今回は雪道には出会わなかったが、4WD車ならまさに鬼に金棒である。PHEVはEVと比べるとバッテリー容量は小さいが、バッテリーがなくなったらエンジンが自動でかかる。通勤や買い物ではEVとして使える反面、今回のようなロングドライブで電欠の心配をしなくていいのは本当に便利だ。
