シカゴで見られる歴史的建築
1925年落成と、現存するシカゴの高層建築でもっとも古い「トリビューン・タワー（地元紙シカゴ・トリビューンの本社だった）」は、マンションに生まれ変わるために現在は改築中。アールデコ様式のザ・マートやリバーサイド・プラザ、ミース・ファン・デル・ローエによるミッドセンチュリー様式華やかなりし頃のAMAプラザこと旧IBMビルディングもあれば、ポストモダン時代の代表といえるNBCビルディングやボーイング本社も見られる。あるいは2017年着工のもっとも新しいスカイスクレイパーのひとつリバー・ポイント、そしてブルジュ・ハリファと同じ設計事務所が担当したトランプ・タワーなど、シカゴのあらゆる時代の高層建築を船上から解説つきで眺められる。約1.5時間の乗船ツアーで料金は税込みで50ドル弱だが、リバー・クルーズのチケットはそのままCACへの入場割引となり、通常の12ドルが5ドルとなる。
さらにシカゴ市内で訪れるべきは施設は、湖畔の広大な公園、ミレニアム・パークの一角を占める「アート・インスティチュート・オブ・シカゴ」だろう。ここはアメリカ合衆国内でももっとも歴史ある美術館のひとつで1879年に創立。パリのルーヴル美術館に次ぐ規模となる300点以上の後期印象派コレクションを有することでも知られている。とはいえ印象派に限らず、エトルリア時代の陶器や彫像から、エル・グレコにピカソやブラック、リキテンシュタインやホッパーら、幅広い時代の作品を常設展示している。企画展への入場料を含まない、一般入場料は大人1名25ドル～となるが、公園の緑や湖面、そして街並を眺めるテラスも心地よく、かくも恵まれえた環境でアート鑑賞できる美術館は稀といっていい。

またダウンタウンから足を延ばす余裕があるなら、絶対に訪れるべき行先が、フランク・ロイド・ライトが設計し、サウス・ウッドローン・アヴェニュー5757番地にある「ロビー・ハウス」だ。ルイス・サリヴァンの下で修業し、後に日比谷の帝国ホテル旧本館などを設計したフランク・ロイド・ライトは、日本でもよく知られたシカゴの建築家。ロビー・ハウスは、「プレーリー派」と呼ばれ、草原によく馴染むような水平基調の住宅建築の代表的傑作とされ、アメリカ建築家協会による「20世紀の傑作建築10選」にも名を連ねたほどだ。ちなみにシカゴ大学に近いこの地区は今でこそ住宅地だが、ロビー・ハウスが建設された20世紀初頭は、草原だったのだ。
家の内部は、柱が可能な限り省かれた広々した空間構成が印象的である一方、異なる高さの天井で窓側のスペースを細長く切り分けているような演出は、日本家屋の縁側に着想を得たものだとか。同じパターンを繰り返す窓とガラスの模様も、当然ながら障子を連想させるもので、ナチュラルな木の色のトーンといい、日本人の目には不思議な既視感でもって、映る。およそ小一時間ほどのガイドツアーの枠組みでのみ内部見学は可能で、オンラインでのチケット入場料は20ドルから。学生や研究者向けの枠となる火曜と水曜を除いて、木曜から月曜まで一日10回催行されるガイドツアーで、最終枠の目安は季節にもよるが、15時となる。
