テスラ初のSUVと説明されることの多いモデルＸ。しかしそのキャラクターはむしろミニバンに近い。標準モデルこそ2列5人乗りだが、オプションで3列6人乗り、もしくは3列7人乗りを選択でき、しかも3列シートをチョイスしても室内は驚くほど広々している。
全長5ｍ超、全幅約2ｍという巨大なボディには、テスラがファルコンウィングドアと呼ぶ画期的な電動式ガルウイングドアが付いている。ドアに内蔵した超音波センサーが障害物をスキャンしながら2ヶ所のジョイントを巧みにコントロールすることで、わずか30㎝の隙間があれば開閉可能。しかも乗り降りはすこぶるしやすい。開口幅が大きく、かつルーフごと持ちあがる分、小さな子どもをチャイルドシートに乗せるのはスライドドアよりラクかもしれない。
現在、テスラはバッテリー容量を公開していないが、航続距離はロングレンジモデルで507km、パフォーマンスモデルで487kmを確保(ともにWLTP値)。満充電でスタートすれば、継ぎ足し充電が必要になるケースはほとんどなさそうだ。

東京モーターショー会場（写真右上、右下）に入るとまず人の多さに驚く。毎回参加してる人間なら「あれ？」と思うはずだ。開催前は出展メーカーが減少していること、またここ数回の入場者数が減少傾向にあることから盛り上がりに欠けると予想されていたのだが、その数に驚く。後日分かったことだが、前回まで70、80万人まで減っていた来場者は、今年はなんと目標の100万人を突破して130万人超えを達成したという。その理由は諸説あるが、各自動車メーカーが提案する未来のクルマやビジョンを派手に演出し、エンターテイメント性が上がったことも大きな要因だという。
会場に着く前、予め見たいクルマを決めておき、効率良く回るのがこの手のイベントの基本だ。事前に決めたルートで会場を回ると、確かに今までに比べて雰囲気が違う。例えばトヨタブースには未来の物流を担う配達ロボット「TOYOTA Micro Palette」などを展示してあり、来場者が物珍しさで足を止めている。各メーカーの新型モデルもみんな遙か未来を向いていて、クルマより技術の解説を聞いているのが楽しい。無人バス、自動運転のトラック、働くクルマも充実し、子どもも楽しめる。実際、丸々2日間堪能したスタッフは終わり頃にはボロボロに……。
もちろん、自動車に絡む楽しみで変化しつつあるのはショーだけじゃない。レース界の頂点F1（写真左上）もルールを変えて進化を続けている。日本は幸運にも開催国の一つであるから毎年ナマで楽しむことができる。こちらの世界も、今はフォーミュラEというEVのみのレースが盛んに行われるようになるなど、環境は変わりつつある。
クルマの近代化が進めば、アナログ時代のものが注目される。この10年間ほどでクラシックカーのイベントが増加中である。ミッレミリア（写真左下）は毎年秋に開催される最も大きなクラシックラリーイベントだが、秋から春にかけてはこうした古いモデルのイベントが増えていく。スーパーカーや戦前のクルマなど、普段は雑誌やテレビでしか見られないクルマ、しかも走行シーンまで見れるとあって、自動車好きの恒例イベントとして常に人気が高い。
もっと深く足を踏み入れるなら、自分のクルマでサーキットを走らせるイベントや自分と同じ趣味の人が集まるオーナーズミーティングなど、自動車趣味は探せばいくらでも出てくるのだ。「こういった自動車の楽しみ方ができるのも、ひょっとすると今のうちなのかもしれないね」。そんな話をしながら、テスラでモーターショー会場から離れることにした。来月あたりは化石燃料を燃やす遊びにも挑戦したいものだ。

自動車社会同様、大きな変革を伴った今年の東京モーターショー。日本開催ということで出展メーカーは日本メーカーが中心で派手な欧州車勢は参加を見合わせたが逆に日本の技術力を広く発信する場として大盛況となった。大きな2つの会場を用意して、その移動経路にも様々なアトラクションを用意。発表された未来のクルマと共に訪れた人を楽しませた。かつては年に1回乗用車と商用車を分けて交互に開催していたが近年は一本化して2年に1回のペースで開催されている。
