My father’s sense of style was utilitarian and traditional American. I only saw him wear blues and greys from Brooks Brothers or Paul Stuart. He wore Alden shoes, which he shined religiously on Sunday evenings. I remember him telling me once when I asked about his shoes, “You can get Allen Edmonds for less, but they don’t hold up as well as the Aldens.” For casual wear it was Brooks chinos and Lacoste shirts, and sometimes even Levis 501’s, which he would buy at the local discount convenience store on 86th street and 3rd avenue.
