名門マニュファクチュールが複雑機構の新たな表現に挑む
1852年、スイス時計産業の聖都ラ・ショー=ド・フォンに、1人の若き時計師コンスタン・ジラールが、工房を開いた。これが、ジラール・ペルゴの直系のルーツである。彼が、特に情熱を注いだのが、トゥールビヨンであった。フランスで発明された同複雑機構のスイスにおける先駆者であるジラールは、香箱と2番車、トゥールビヨンをかつてない縦一直線に構築し、それら3つを個別に直線状のブリッジで支える構造を考案した。
これをジラール・ペルゴは、1981年に懐中時計で、1991年に腕時計で再現。以来、スリー ブリッジ・トゥールビヨンは、メゾンのアイコンとなった。ダイヤルを取り去り、ゴールド製のスリー ブリッジの全容を見せる様子は、まるで彫刻作品のごとし。さらに2020年に誕生した本作では、ケースの存在感も消し去った。
ご覧のように、透明なケースはサファイアクリスタル製。それに収めたムーブメントは、極限までオープンワークを施して、透明感豊かに仕立てている。さらにアイコンであるスリー ブリッジまでも、サファイアクリスタルで形作ってみせた。左右2つのアーチから成るブリッジは、オリジナルをモダンに再解釈した、名付けてネオブリッジ。透明なケースとブリッジの製作には、精密な切削加工と、ダイヤモンドパウダーポリッシュやケミカルポリッシュなど100以上の工程を必要とし、計200時間以上かかるという。こうして完璧な透明感を得たブリッジの1つが支えるトゥールビヨンは、宙に浮かんでいるかのよう。そのキャリッジは、わずか2.5gにまで軽量化してもいる。
透明なケースの内部に届いた光は、香箱上の希少金属ルテニウムをより華やかに煌めかせる。ゼンマイは、比重が高いホワイトゴールド製のマイクロローターが巻き上げ、60時間駆動を得ている。
モデル名にあるクエーサーとは、強烈な光を放つ天体の意。透明なスリー ブリッジは、光を受け輝く。
