3大複雑機構も搭載する画期的な天体表示時計
2000年、新ミレニアムの到来をパテック フィリップは21もの機構をもつ懐中時計スターキャリバー2000で祝した。そして2001年、新世紀の幕開けは、その腕時計版とも捉えられるスカイムーン・トゥールビヨンで祝した。搭載するのは、スターキャリバー2000から受け継ぐ12の機構。そして懐中時計と同じくダブルフェイスとすることで、裏面には完全な天体図が再現された。サファイアクリスタルのケースバックの下で星座表が反時計回りに回転し、星と月の動き、1等星シリウスや月の子午線の通過時刻、そして月の満ち欠けが表される。外周には24時間目盛りが備わり、2本指針がそれを指し、恒星時を示す。サファイアクリスタルに描かれた楕円は、ある地点から今見える星空を星座表から切り取っている。
かくも複雑な裏面の天体表示のみならず、表側のダイヤルの機構にも凝る。搭載するのは、永久カレンダーとムーンフェイズ。日付表示はレトログラード式とし、ムーンフェイズは122年に1日の誤差という超高精度をかなえているのだ。
そしてモデル名から分かるように、ダブルフェイスの内にはトゥールビヨンを搭載。すべての表示は、高精度で調速されているのである。そしてケース左サイドに備わるレバーが、ミニッツリピーター搭載であることを伝える。パテック フィリップは1990年代に、スイス連邦ローザンヌ工科大学と共同でリピーターのゴングに最適な合金の研究を行っていた。その成果が、このモデルのゴングである。独自の合金製ゴングは、従来のスチール製と比べて残響が大きく、朗々と時打ちの音色が広がる。さらにゴングの長さをケース外周を超えるものに設えたことで、低音のゴングの音色は、より一層豊かな残響を得ることにも成功した。
2つの複雑機構を隠し、包み込むケース全体はハンドエングレービングで、表のダイヤルはクロワゾネとシャンルベのエナメル技巧で究極の美が与えられた。
