複雑機構の魅力と視認性とを最大限に引き出すフォルム
水平軸と垂直軸、2つの回転軸（バイアクシス）をもつトゥールビヨンを搭載したのがこのモデル。各回転軸は、一方が1分間で、他方が30秒で1回転する設計となっている。2017年に発表したウブロ初のバイ-アクシス・トゥールビヨンを備える自社製Cal.HUB9009.H1.RAが、チェックに似たユニークな模様を浮かべる、軽量な3Dカーボン製のケースに収められた。
このムーブメントを開発するにあたって、バイ-アクシス・トゥールビヨンの魅力を最大限に生かし、かつ優れた視認性も得られる新たな形状のケースも並行して開発を進めた。ケースの下側を強くカーブさせながら伸ばし、キャリッジの立体的な回転域を確保した。さらにケースの下側終端のカーブ面もサファイアクリスタルで覆い、複雑なキャリッジの回転が様々な方向から見えるよう設えている。極めて複雑な曲面を、ダイヤモンドに次ぐ硬さをもつサファイアクリスタルで実現したのは、驚きである。
この個性的なケース形状によって、すべての表示は、トゥールビヨンの上側に視覚的に切り離された。ケースのフラットな開口部の右上に、時分針ダイヤルをオフセットして設置。そのダイヤルの左サイドに沿うように置かれた2つの円弧が、日付表示を担う。二重の円弧には、オープンワークで内側には1～15、外側には16～31の日付インデックスが備わり、その下を動く赤い指標でその日の日付を示す仕掛け。このユニークなデイト機構は、ケース左サイドのレバーで前後に日付が調整できる優れた操作性も与えられている。そして円弧の左側には、ゲージで表示される約5日間のパワーリザーブ計が備わる。
これら各表示は、トゥールビヨンから視覚的に切り離されているだけに留まらず、すべてが重ならない配置となり、視認性をさらに高めている。大胆な外観は、時計の本質的機能を追求した結果だ。
